Doha: Al-Ahli Hospital performs endometrial ablation for premenopausal women with heavy periods due to benign causes who are finished childbearing with the best and latest surgical techniques.

The idea of skipping a major surgery like hysterectomy, in favour of a 'minimally invasive' procedure, is appealing. Studies have indicated that endometrial ablation is generally safe and works as it's supposed to for most women.

Dr. Mumtaz Rashid the Consultant OB&GYNE at Al-Ahli Hospital, discusses endometrial ablation as a proven safe, efficient and effective treatment option for abnormal uterine bleeding in affected women.

Abnormal uterine bleeding leading to heavy menstrual bleeding is a prevalent disease affecting 30% of women in their lifetimes and approximately 10 million women per year.

She said,“A 50-year-old professional came to my clinic with a history of heavy prolonged periods dating back to some three years. She had tried hormonal and non-hormonal treatment including Mirena coil without satisfactory outcome.

“Due to her periods problem she had to take frequent time off work and was worried about the impact it was having on her employment. She had been told by various physicians that the option left at this stage was major surgery in the form of hysterectomy (removal of her uterus) until she attended my clinic.”

Dr. Rashid added,“Because hysterectomy being classed as major surgery with longer recovery period, this option was not acceptable to her. She also told me that she couldn't afford to take any more time off work because of the nature of her employment. She was desperate to find something non- invasive and effective alternative treatment. I offered her endometrial ablation procedure which she happily accepted.”

Dr. Rashid said she was scheduled for the procedure the next day on urgent basis as she was having ongoing bleeding issue.“The total duration of the procedure took only four minutes. She was discharged the same day and was able to resume her duty the day after. It has been 18 months since the procedure, she has had no periods since the procedure and her hormones test confirmed she was not menopausal yet.”

In additional she said the patient was very happy with the outcome and greatly appreciated that ultimately her problem was solved without resolving to a major surgery.

In an endometrial ablation procedure the thin layer of tissue (endometrium) that lines the uterus is removed.

The endometrial ablation procedure is the most updated and most commonly used procedure available in the market.

“I would also like to emphasise that endometrial ablation is highly effective, quick (takes less than five minutes) to perform, with mild or no post op pain, rapid return to normal activity; there is no incision or cut in the body and it can be performed even if the patient is having her periods.”

Dr. Rashid has performed several of these procedures with high patient satisfaction rate including amongst the patients done at Al-Ahli hospital. She said that endometrial ablation is for premenopausal women with heavy periods due to benign causes who have finished childbearing.
