Massive European gas fears staying vacant

(MENAFN) According to Bloomberg, the Haidach underground gas storage facility in Austria may not be replenished before the next hot season owing to a confrontation between Berlin and Moscow over the takeover of Gazprom's German company.

The plant is in Austria, but it is linked to the German gas network and gets Russian gas from there. It is one of Europe's largest, capable of meeting almost a fifth of Austria's yearly gas demands.

It has, however, been vacant for some time.

Gazprom's subsidiary Gazprom Germania uses a portion of the plant. Nevertheless, Moscow ceased providing it with gas after Berlin confiscated the firm in the midst of Russia's Ukraine-related sanctions. According to the German news portal, DW, another section of the facility is utilized by Gazprom's subsidiary GSA but has been unoccupied for some months.
