“Hassan Sheik Mohamud is the winner of the election for the president of the Somali Federal republic,” said the speaker of the lower house, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur.

In a long-awaited vote that began earlier on Sunday in the capital Mogadishu, Somalia's presidential election advanced to the third round on Sunday.

Only four of the 36 candidates who competed in the first round advanced to the second round as none of them receive enough votes to win outright.

Only the current president, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, and his predecessor, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, have advanced to the concluding third round of voting, which will determine the country's next leader by a simple majority.

In the runoff, the newly elected president, Mohamud, overcame his opponent with 214 votes, while Mohamed received only 110 votes.

Members of parliament and senators who chose Mohamud were chosen by clan chiefs' delegates. The president was supposed to be elected by the Somali people through universal suffrage, but the country's political elite eventually abandoned that plan.

The news of Mohamud's triumph was welcomed with cheers and bullets fired into the air in the Mogadishu city.
