Sikka Art and Design Festival 2022 shed light on Emirati and UAE- and GCC-based talents who presented a range of arts and performances in Dubai's Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood over a period of 10 days from 15 to 24 March. Participation in this pioneering art festival, which was held by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), proved to be a unique experience for young and emerging artists as well as a great opportunity for them to Network and build confidence in their creativity.

Inspired by the festival's theme, 'Celebrating Art, Celebrating Growth,' a group of renowned Emirati and international talents created innovative installations and artworks that were creatively transformed into stunning shows, telling the story of the neighbourhood and the journey of successes that flourished there.

More confidence

Mexican artist Paola Lopez describes her experience at the festival, saying:“Sikka gave me more confidence in myself as an artist and allowed me to highlight my passion for flowers. The idea for my installation (Seeds of Life) was inspired by the Sidr tree. Through Sikka, I dedicated myself completely to art, and it will be a pleasure to participate in the festival's upcoming editions; I was really fascinated by this experience.”

Uniqueness and dedication

Dr Georges Kachaamy describes his participation in the 10th edition of the festival, saying:“This was the first time I participate in Sikka, and I found it a vibrant place and one of my best experiences at the Emirati, GCC and international levels. One of the best opportunities Sikka presented me with was the interaction with peers and clients whom I encountered. The other interesting aspect of Sikka as a place is its ability to integrate the past (through beautiful houses) with the present (through its social activities) and the future (through its exhibitions). Sikka made me want to hold more exhibitions.”

Kachaamy expressed his pride in the experience and the desire to repeat it, saying:“I will participate again in Sikka, and I recommend other artists to participate as well. The whole team was highly professional and helpful, inviting a number of media and VIPs to our exhibition site that reflected the distinction and dedication of the team behind this wonderful exhibition.”

Light

Maryam Alhemeiri, one of the Emirati artists participating in Sikka 2022 highlighted her experience, saying:“The festival shed a lot of light on my art, whether from a local or international perspective. This is a wonderful achievement for me as an emerging artist, especially as the festival represented an exceptional opportunity for me. I encourage artists to participate in this wonderful festival.”

Alhemeiri participated with 'Gademak Nadimak,' which blends the present and the past, mixes some customs and traditions with modernity, and brings back memories of the Emirati past. Through it, the artist wanted to revive old tales, poetry and stories.

Priceless experience

As for Russian artist Evguenia Silvina, who maintains her inspiration by constantly keeping up with everything new in various fields, following modern artistic trends, communicating with nature, and listening to music, she participated in the festival with a mural 'Entanglement' and an installation work titled 'I-Live.' Silvina describes her experience, saying:“Participating in Sikka is always a great opportunity to connect with other talented artists, coming up with potential collaborations, integrating multiple disciplines, and broadening the creative approach to future artworks. Sikka is a great platform to showcase your art to the general public from which I experienced a great interaction and received great comments from visitors. Few job opportunities allow me to continue to invent new ways of artistic expression and make a living from art. I believe this experience is every artist's dream, and I am grateful to Dubai Culture, the Sikka team and Room Five for making this dream come true for me.”

Silvina continued,“I was fortunate to have two spaces to explore: a large wall for a mural and a beautiful Sidr tree for installation. Sikka is an invaluable experience for anyone who loves art in all its forms.”

A platform to support artists

Sikka Art and Design Festival is an annual initiative by Dubai Culture that aims to integrate, enrich and refine the positive energies of emerging artists, through platforms specialised in various types of arts. The next edition will be held from 24 February to 5 March 2023. The festival constitutes a huge platform for Emirati artists and residents of the UAE and the GCC. It features artworks, discussions, musical and entertainment performances, film screenings and performing arts, as well as educational programmes and activities for children.
