AMMAN — On behalf of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Brazilian Ambassador to Jordan Ruy Amaral awarded the Order of Rio Branco to MP Andre Hawari on Tuesday.

Hawari received the decoration during a ceremony hosted by Amaralat at the Brazilian embassy in Amman with the presence of Lower House Speaker Abdulkarim Dughmi along with a number of ministers, businesspeople and parliament members.

The Order of Rio Branco is named in honour of José Paranho, Baron of Rio Branco, who is considered the patron of the Brazilian diplomacy and credited with“the consolidation of the Brazilian borders by peaceful means and diplomatic action”, according to Amaral.

This decoration is an acknowledgment from the Brazilian government of Hawari's role“in strengthening bilateral relations between Brazil and Jordan in the interest of both nations' peoples”, he said.

In his speech during the honouring ceremony, Amaral commended Hawari's work as Chairman of the Tourism Committee in the Jordanian Parliament.

He noted that tourism is a strategic economic activity that generates employment opportunities and sources of income for millions of families in both Brazil and Jordan.

“The development of tourism is a premise for peace,” added Amaral, as it“brings people together, eliminates stereotypes, promotes understanding and builds relationships”.

He also commended Jordanians' welcoming attitude towards Brazilian tourists who were drawn by its“historical, religious, and culinary heritage and, above all, its people”.

Jordan, which has six UNESCO world heritage sites, has received around 20,000 Brazilian tourists in 2019, marking a 38 per cent increase compared with 2018,“which couldn't have been achieved without the active involvement of Andre Hawari,” said Amaral.

He added:“As a member of the Jordanian Brazilian Business Association, Hawari has contributed to enhancing bilateral trade to reach $500,000,000 in 2021 as well as increasing Jordanian exports to Brazil by 1,600 per cent in the last three years”.
