São Paulo – Algeria has banned the export of basic consumer imports, such as sugar, pasta, oil, semolina e wheat derivatives. The measure was taken on Sunday (13) in a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune and announced in a statement.

In effect, exports from Algeria of imported staples were banned. The measure was taken after a presentation of the ministers of Agriculture and Trade on the availability of staples.

The president instructed the minister of Justice to prepare a draft law criminalizing the export of products not produced locally, being an act of sabotage to the national economy. The ban on the import of frozen meat was also maintained to encourage the consumption of locally produced meat.

The Algerian government also ordered to encourage farmers who supply the strategic stock of the country in wheat and soft and pulses with various incentives, including support in the form of loans, fertilizer, and other benefits, state-owned news agency Algérie Presse Service (APS) reported.

The decision was taken amid global concerns regarding shortages of some staples due to war between Ukraine and Russia and the dramatic rise in food prices. Other countries like Egypt have taken similar measures to ensure the domestic supply and contain prices.
