KABUL: The EU provides € 268.3 million to support the education, health and livelihoods of the Afghan people. The EU has launched € 268.3 million projects that increase much-needed support to the Afghan people in the great humanitarian crisis facing Afghanistan. EU support focuses on maintaining education, maintaining livelihoods and protecting public health, and includes refugees, migrants and internally displaced persons. It is provided through the UN agencies operating in Afghanistan (UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNHCR, WHO, IOM) directly to the Afghan population. Two projects support human rights defenders and civil society organizations.

International Partnership Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen said: “The key principle of the EU's engagement in the world is not to miss anyone. Today, we are proving what we have said many times: we will not leave the Afghan people. I am pleased that we are addressing basic human needs and supporting livelihoods on the basis of clear parameters set by the Foreign Affairs Council. The projects focus on health, nutrition, clean water, hygiene and education, especially for women and girls. We also support income-generating activities, food security and local markets. We have responded quickly to alleviate the suffering of the population and preserve the future for the Afghan people, especially women and young people.“

Seven EU projects worth a total of € 186 million support the health, education and livelihood of Afghans. The projects will be implemented through the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Food Program (WFP).
