Jordan - Regional conference highlights importance of youth's political participation

AMMAN — The Royal directives to form a committee to modernise the political system in Jordan stated its motive to review all policies and laws to realiseyouth political empowerment and expand the participation of the youth in partisan and parliamentary life, Youth Minister Mohammed Nabulsi said on Saturday.

Delivering a speech during the inauguration of the regional conference 'Youth and political participation: Structure, forms and challenges', Nabulsi said that the national youth strategy for 2019-2025 includes aspects related to youth and effective citizenship and several action programmes concerned with youth empowerment, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

During the two-day event, co-organised by the Norwegian embassy and Al-Quds Centre for Political Studies, Nabulsi said that the ministry seeks to develop and activate youth's role in political life through the political institute's programme, which simulates 'the real political life'.

Oraib Rantawi, head of the centre, said that the event will review the experiments of Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Algeria and Sudan and will discuss forms of political participation of the youth in terms of their structures, components, programmes and relations with the various political frameworks. 

Rita Sandberg, minister and deputy head of the Norwegian mission to Jordan, said that 'it is encouraging to see that the youth's role and their importance in the policy making process in Jordan receives much attention'.

Sandberg added that all agree on the huge development benefits for investing in the youth and providing them with opportunities to be a main part society's development.
