Explore how sand lines can create an architectural design in an exhibit taking place in Katara Building 18, starting tomorrow until January 28,2022.

Dubbed“Geometric study of sand line, in the Qatari architecture,” this exhibit will feature 3D models, sculptures, sketches and posters by Architect Mohanad Barakat.

Barakat told The Peninsula that seven of his projects will be featured in the said exhibit including designs he did for a museum, resort, group of gardens, and a hotel.

Likewise, sculptures of 7m x 1.5m showing the study of lines of sand dunes as well as sketches on the wall will be on the display.

“This exhibition tells how we study the lines and the structure of sand dunes and how it affect and create illusions from the wind directions. These lines then we can use as a design to new buildings, like a resort, hotel, museums, with a touch of Qatari architectural design. In integrating architecture, we use some pattern and ornaments from Qatar and we mix it with this kind of lines and designs,” Barakat explained.

Barakat is the first architect to draw inspiration from the sand dunes, the idea came out because of his love for the sand.“I go to sand dunes, take photos and videos, I sit and sketch it. The sand dunes are created by the sand and the wind. The wind, it will move the sand and the sand will create a sand dune mountain,” he narrated.

“From the wind direction, it will create shape, and these lines that we don't see — wind lines, this is how it affects the sand and how the sand go with the wind and how it is created by the wind, so these designs are what you can see in my exhibition,” Barakat further stated.

Barakat is an interior architet, a Syrian national born in Qatar. He graduated with a Bachelor degree from Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Interior Architecture in Damascus University.

Currently, he is the General Manager of Baroque Design and Build Company.
