Ecuador: 24 killed at prison riot

(MENAFN) Authorities and the National Police stated that on Tuesday, Sep. 28 over 24 inmates died and 48 other were wounded in riots at the Litoral Penitentiary based in the coastal city of Guayaquil, in southwestern Ecuador.

Addressing local media, Pablo Arosemena, the governor of the province of Guayas, whose capital is Guayaquil, affirmed the number of victims in early Tuesday’s melee in several parts of the prison.

Arosemena noted that the fighting occurred between gangs combating for control of drug smuggling and other crimes plotted in the prison.

It was the most fatal such occurrence since February, when a string of arranged riots at four prisons killed 79 inmates and injured around 20 people, comprising police officers.
