Participants from over 30 nations vie for Sheikh Hamad translation award


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: The Board of Trustees of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding (SHATIU) have announced that the Steering Committee has completed the preliminary screening process for the nominations of winners for the 2021 (7th) season of the award.

The committee revealed that the entries for this year include individuals and institutions specialised in translation from 32 Arab and non-Arab countries. 

The spokesperson of the Award, Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad, said the nomination for the 7th edition of the Award is closed, and the Steering Committee received nominations from more than 30 countries including Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Yemen, Egypt, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Nigeria, South Africa, Canada, USA, Britain, Greece, Netherlands, France, Thailand, and Belgium.

Dr. Al Fayyad also indicated that the works presented for the award covered human sciences, including Islamic studies, literature, philosophy, social sciences, political science, history, and other fields.  Al Fayyad added that the SHATIU winners would be announced in December 2021, and the exact date for that will be revealed later. 

It is worth mentioning that the value of SHATIU amounts to $2m. It honours translators and appreciates their contributions in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between nations and peoples. It also encourages creativity, consolidating high values, and spreading diversity, pluralism, and openness. 

The award aspires to establish a culture of knowledge and dialogue, spread Arab and Islamic culture, and developing international understanding. 

In its seventh season, the award adopted the Chinese language as a second main language along with English and four languages in the achievement categories. 

The Award categories for this year include translation from Arabic into English, translation from English into Arabic, translation from Arabic into Chinese, translation category from Chinese into Arabic, achievement award in the two major languages (English and Chinese), as well as categories of achievement awards in translations of selected languages from and into Arabic: Amharic, Urdu, Greek, Dutch as sub-languages.
