Pakistan cricket Board (PCB) new chairman Ramiz Raza on Monday announced that Matthew Hayden and Vernon Philander will join Pakistan’s coaching staff during the T20 World Cup.
However, their roles are yet to be specified. Raja even added that a Head Coach will be added to the coaching staff, but did not mention any name. Both Hayden and Philander don’t have any coaching experience. Hayden and Philander will replace Misbah
Haq and Waqar Younis after both coaches stepped down from their respective roles just after the World Cup squad was named last week. Last week, the PCB announced that Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdul Razzaq would be interim coaches for the time being (New Zealand tour). “The Australian can bring some aggression into the team. He has experience of World Cups and was a world-class player himself. Having an Australian in the dressing room will be of great benefit for us. I know him(Philander) well, he understands the nuances of bowling and he has a great record in Australia.” PCB’s newly-elected chairman Ramiz Raja said.
“The national side has the potential to win the World Cup, and we need to back the side selected for the global event. We need to fine-tune our plans. Pakistan cricket's DNA consists of fearlessness, and we need to define a proper model and provide clarity to achieve desired results.” he added
Matthew Hayden – A giant of the game
Australian batsman Matthew Hayden was one of the most destructive openers during his playing days. He played a massive role in Australia's dominance in world cricket in the 2000s. Overall in his career, he played 9 T20Is, scoring 308 runs with a strike rate of 143.92. He also played 103 Tests and 161 ODIs in an international career that spanned 15 years. He was a member of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad in 2007, which reached the semifinals of the tournament. Hayden was also the highest run-getter of the 2007 Men’s T20 World Cup, scoring 265 runs in six matches.
Philander didn’t have a great record with the white-ball for South Africa but he was part of the 2007 T20 WC team. Veron was one of the key members of South Africa’s test squad and has great success with the red ball. The right-arm pacer has picked 224 wickets in 64 matches at an impressive average of 22.32. Philander bagged 4 wickets in 7 T20Is.
