Covid crime: Man in Vietnam put behind bars for spreading covid-19

What is the covid crime all about?
Vietnam was turning into a success story for controlling COVID-19 infections. The country employed a combination of mass testing, aggressive tracing, strict quarantine, and tight borer restrictions. However, new infection clusters since the end of April have tarnished Vietnam’s good record. So far, Vietnam has sentenced two additional people to an 18 month and two-year-long jail sentence for covid crimes.
“Tung traveled back to Ca Mau from Ho Chi Minh City and breached the 21-day quarantine regulations. He infected eight people, one of whom died due to the virus after one month of treatment,” reported a news agency. The accused was found breaching a 21-day home quarantine regulation after he tested positive for COVID-19 on July 7, 2021. “Tri’s breach of the home medical quarantine regulation led to many people becoming infected with COVID-19 and one person died on 7 August 2021,” stated the court report.
The situation in Vietnam
Vietnam’s battle against COVID-19 is devastating. The coronavirus outbreak has infected over 536,000 people and caused 13,385 deaths in the past few months. Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s epicenter for the virus faces great devastation. Over 260,000 cases and 10,685 deaths are from Ho Chi Minh City alone.
However, Cau Mau, the country’s southernmost province has reported a total of 191 cases and two death since the start of the pandemic. As of now, the vast majority of infections and deaths are from the last four months. And, Vietnam ‘s capital Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, the commercial hub is in strict lockdown.
