Day after the Taliban got closer ever to the strategic Mazar-e-sharif city of northern Balkh province, President Ashraf Ghani leading a high-level delegation arrived in the province to assess the security situation of Balkh in particular and other northern provinces on the whole.

Presidential Palace (ARG) in a statement said that the Afghan president is due to hold separate meetings with civil and military officials of the province, political leaders and Jihadists, and other tribal leaders and patriarchs.

President Ghani visits Balkh province hours after Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum along with his tens of commando went to the Province on Tuesday night.  Dostum is said to be leading operation against the Taliban in Northern provinces.

The Taliban fighters have toppled Dostum's birthplace, Jawzjan province, and have also occupied his glorious palace in the provincial city of Sheberghan.

Balkh province which borders Tajikistan has been somehow beleaguered by the Taliban as the fighters have taken all the neighboring provinces of Balkh.

The fighters are currently holding control of Jawzjan, Samangan, Saripol, Baghlan, Kunduz, and Takhar provinces which border Balkh.

The Taliban are controlling nearly the entire northern blitz of Afghanistan.

It comes as the neighboring countries, the US, and representatives of other multilateral organizations are holding meetings on Afghanistan in Doha so that they press the Taliban to end the ongoing offensive.
