US welcomes UNSC unanimous adoption to extend delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, July 9 (KUNA) -- The White House welcomed Friday the unanimous adoption in the UN Security Council (UNSC) today to extend the mandate for a "critical humanitarian lifeline to Syria."
"This agreement, which will directly impact the lives of millions of Syrians, was the result of hard work among the members of the council and intensive diplomacy," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters.
She added that today's resolution, "which renews the cross-border agreement that would have expired on July 10th, will provide further lifesaving humanitarian assistance to the people of Northwest Syria and as part of a broader humanitarian initiative led by the United Nations."
Meanwhile, State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Jalina Porter told reporters in a telephonic briefing that today's resolution was "an important moment for the UN and the Security Council, demonstrating that we can work together to find solutions and deliver action on the world's most pressing challenges."
She added that "today the Security Council averted an even worse catastrophe for a population that has already suffered far too much," as the UN and its NGO partners "can now continue uninterrupted the important business of saving lives through the delivery of food, shelter, medicine, COVID-19 vaccines, and other humanitarian assistance to Syrians in need."
