Human rights protection linked to individual values, Kuwait tells UN forum

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENVA, Feb 26 (KUNA) -- Global efforts to protect human rights should take into account individual values and established social norms, Kuwait said on Friday, pushing for more constructive dialogue on an international level to bring attention to the matter.
"There appears to be some views that draw a line between political rights and social and economic ones," the countryآ's permanent representative Jamal Al-Ghunaim said amid a session of the UN Human Rights Council, adding that such narratives undermine the UN rights body's work.
He regretted that some efforts to protect human rights often run counter to established social and cultural norms, saying that human rights issues are at the core of his countryآ's ideologies, a notion that has been "translated into national legislation and policies."
Kuwaitآ's firm belief in human rights has given impetus to the countryآ's global aid delivery efforts, added the diplomat, citing a sum of USD 40 million Kuwait donated to the World Health Organization to support the fight against the coronavirus back when the pandemic was in its infancy.
As the pandemic continued to strain healthcare systems around the world, he said Kuwait rushed to provide much needed aid to countries unable to cope with the worsening outbreak, besides similar assistance given to victims of natural disasters and armed conflict, he underlined.
Being the only global body that protects and promotes human rights worldwide, he said the UN Human Rights Council will always have Kuwaitآ's backing, which is necessary to bring this "noble aspiration" to fruition, he said. (end)
