(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Cairo, Jan 11 (Petra) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi Monday took part in the fourth ministerial meeting of the Munich Group, which was held in Cairo along with the foreign ministers of Egypt, Sameh Shoukry, France, Jean-Yves Le Drian, and Germany, Heiko Maas.
The meeting focused on the need to continue coordination on the Middle East peace process and "find a Political horizon" to kickstart serious and effective Palestinian-Israeli negotiations to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.
The ministers said in a statement that they met to continue coordination and consultation on ways to push forward the peace process in the Middle East towards reaching a just, comprehensive and lasting peace.
The ministers discussed their recent contacts with the Palestinian and Israeli foreign ministers and each party's point of view, it said, adding that today's meeting was an opportunity to discuss potential steps to advance the peace process and create an environment conducive to resuming dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis.
They called on the two sides to deepen cooperation and dialogue based on reciprocal commitments, and welcomed the Palestinian Authority's decision to resume cooperation provided Israel abides by previous agreements.
Referring to the principles contained in their joint statement issued on September 24, 2020 at an Amman meeting, the ministers reiterated full support of all efforts to realize a just and lasting peace in the Middle East in accordance with the international law, relevant UN Security Council resolutions and agreed-upon parameters referred to in the Arab Peace Initiative.
They said that resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution is indispensable to achieving a comprehensive peace in the region, reaffirming their commitment to two states, an independent and viable Palestinian state on the lines of June 4, 1967, living alongside a secure and recognized Israel.
The ministers emphasized the role of the United States, and said they are ready to work with Washington to facilitate negotiations leading to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the region on the basis of internationally-recognized parameters, and re-launch a credible peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
Further, they called on the parties to refrain from any unilateral measures that undermine the future of reaching a just and lasting solution to the conflict, and in this context, renewed a call for implementing UN Security Council resolutions to immediately and completely halt all settlement activities, including in East Jerusalem.
They were unanimous that building and expanding settlements and confiscating Palestinian property violates international law and undermines the two-state solution.
They also stressed the importance of adherence to the international humanitarian law in the Palestinian territories that were occupied in 1967, including East Jerusalem, and the need to safeguard their character and status.
The ministers emphasized upholding the existing historical and legal status of the holy places in Jerusalem and the importance of the historical Hashemite custodianship over the holy places.
They also stressed the importance of the peace agreements between the Arab countries and Israel, including the accords signed recently, which will contribute to resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict according to the two-state solution and achieving comprehensive and lasting peace.
