Sheikh Mohammed approves UAE centre to regulate organ transplants

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A centre to regulate transplantation of human organs and tissues will be set up as part of the Ministry of Health and Prevention.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, approved a decision to this effect on Wednesday.

The decision seeks to regulate and coordinate organ transplant surgeries across the country. It will also regulate preservation of human tissues.

The decision aims to "strengthen medical and social care for organ donation and transplantation in accordance with highest international standards and ethics of medical practice", a statement on Sheikh Mohammed''s official website said.

The centre will establish partnerships with health authorities and entities across the country to ensure that all surgeries are successful. It will help facilitate reception of organs from donors and getting them to people in need.

The centre will create a central record of the people who have registered for organs. It will facilitate the best healthcare provision for donors as well.

According to a report on state news agency Wamin December 2019, the UAE is one of only two countries in the region that provides organ donation and transplantation, alongside Saudi Arabia. The UAE''s organ transplant law came into effect in 2016 and it regulates the process of donating organs and tissues; and prevents exploitation of the patient''s or the donor''s needs. Under the law, trafficking of human organs and tissues is banned.
