Malta to move refugees to other EU countries

(MENAFN) The government said on Monday that Malta has reached an arrangement with the EU for the moving of 284 refugees to other member countries.

Citing a Maltese government report, local media outlets said that "discussion on the relocation of a further 80 were still ongoing".

The report didn't indicate which EU countries had committed to taking in the moved refugees.

Malta closed its ports to refuge seekers and immigrants since the start of the COVID-19 outburst. However, constricted measures did not stop immigrants from coming, causing the start of discussions between Malta and other EU member countries.

In May, more than 400 saved refugees were kept in vessels by Maltese authorities.
The government said it spent EUR1.7 million (USD1.92 million) on keeping the refugees on board these vessels.
