UN official: Upholding Iraq's security, stability 'imperative'

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) IRBIL, Jan 13 (KUNA) -- It is imperative to uphold the security and stability of Iraq and the entire region, said a UN official on Monday, adding that the government in Baghdad was in the midst of "difficult circumstances".
Amid talks with Prime Minister of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region, Masrour Barzani, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, said that further turmoil is not in the best interest of Iraqis.
Thousands of mostly young Iraqis have been demonstrating for months against corruption, unemployment and poor public services since October in the country's worst unrest in years. (end)
