Jordan- FM urges pressure on Israel to stop violations against Jerusalem


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Aug. 18 (Petra) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi on Sunday called on the international community to take effective and quick steps to pressure Israel to stop its violations against holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, describing such acts as a breach of international law and a dangerous escalation that fuels the conflict and threatens regional and international peace and security.
During a meeting with EU ambassadors to the Kingdom to discuss the Israeli escalation in Jerusalem, the foreign minister warned of the dangerous consequences of Israeli violations and unilateral steps aimed at changing the historical and legal situation in the holy sites.
Safadi stressed that Israel, as the occupying power under international law, must respect the historical and legal status in occupied Jerusalem and its Muslim and Christian holy sites.
The minister briefed the envoys on efforts exerted by the Kingdom to protect Jerusalem's holy sites under the direct follow-up of His Majesty King Abdullah II, the custodian over Muslim and Christian sanctities in Jerusalem, referring to His Majesty's affirmation that Jerusalem and its holy places a red line and that Jerusalem is the key to a comprehensive and lasting peace.
"The condemned Israeli measures against the holy sites in occupied Jerusalem inflame the feelings of Muslims and Christians in the Arab and Muslim worlds and only Israel will be responsible for the consequences", Safadi told the meeting.
The minister stressed the need for a concerted international community effort to solve the conflict according to the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on pre-June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Safadi appreciated the EU's position in support of the two-state solution and Jerusalem, which upholds international legitimacy as the governing reference for the resolution of the conflict.
The EU ambassador and other envoys affirmed support for the two-state solution as the only practical way to resolve the conflict according to international legitimacy resolutions.
