Lebanon detains 4 over vegetable smuggling

(MENAFN) Four trucks were seized on Tuesday in Lebanon with vegetables smuggled from Syria, online independent newspaper Elnashra reported.

Lebanese state security detained the drivers of the trucks, moving them to related judiciary bodies in order to carry out more inquiries on the matter, the report affirmed.

Traders are currently purchasing goods from Syria since they are more affordable, explained Head of the Lebanese Farmers' Association Antoine Howayek.

Howayek added "also, farmers' harvests, last year, were impacted by the weather in Lebanon which led them to produce less this year, prompting merchants to buy agricultural products from Syria."
