(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Oman has been ranked second out of the 151 countries on the Global Wellness Index.Smaller countries like the sultanate are increasingly dominating the global wellness lists while big countries with booming economies fall behind.

This trend is evident in the latest assessment on global living standards that try to gauge how healthy, happy and successful humans are, depending on where they live.

The Global Wellness Index published by investment firm LetterOne, ranks Canada as the best country out of the 151 nations. Asian countries dominate the top 10 spots: the Philippines (4), the Maldives (5), Singapore (7), Laos (8), South Korea (9) and Cambodia (10). The other two in top ten being Iceland (3) and the Netherlands (6).

Oman is the runner-up with positive indicators across the board, except for a slight hitch in obesity and level of depression, the index stated. In the overall list, several major economies struggle when ranked against smaller, healthier countries. The US trails far behind, coming in at 37.

In the ranking of G-20 nations combined with the 20 most populous countries on the planet, South Africa comes last, below Ukraine, Egypt and Iraq.

The Indigo Wellness Index tracks the world's healthiest countries across ten key measures. The index is one of the first comprehensive global wellness indices to be published, covering over 150 countries, compared to the existing Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development index, which aggregates data from fewer than 50 countries.

The Indigo Wellness Index draws on findings as diverse as the World Health Organization, the World Happiness Report, and public health data.

The index focuses on ten key metrics: blood pressure, blood glucose, obesity, depression, happiness, alcohol use, tobacco use, exercise, healthy life expectancy, and government spending on healthcare. The US and Japan also score surprisingly low, and sit outside the top 25, held back by poor scores on obesity and blood pressure.

The UK, with the fifth highest GDP ranking globally, comes in at 16th place, while the Maldives comes in at fourth place despite having a lower GDP ranking at 169th position.
