Turkish, US officials discuss Syrian file

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, March 5 (KUNA) -- Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar discussed with US special envoy to Syria James Jeffrey on Tuesday the latest developments in the Syrian file, including the situation in the city of Manbij and the east of the Euphrates River.
In a statement, the Turkish Defense Ministry said that Akar stressed the need to speed up the completion of the Manbij roadmap, which provides for the removal of People' Protection Units, which Ankara considers an extension of the PKK in Syria, from the city.
Akar affirmed the importance of Turkey's responsibility for security in the demilitarized zone to be built in Syria and his country's determination to protect its interests in accordance with international laws and agreements, while respecting Turkey's territorial integrity.
The Turkish minister called for solving the problems through joint action between Turkey and the US.
Turkey and the US agreed on June 18 to withdraw the forces of the People' Protection Units from Manbij in order to stabilize the region. (end) rs.aa
