Pakistan attempts to persuade Taliban to meet U.S envoy


(MENAFN) Pakistan is encouraging the Afghan Taliban leaders to have a meeting with U.S. peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, who is presently in Pakistan for an intra-Afghan political settlement local media reported.

However, the Afghan Taliban have officially proclaimed that they would not hold any meeting with the U.S. Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad in Islamabad.

"We want to make it clear that we will not hold any meeting with Zalmay Khalilzad in Islamabad," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated in a brief statement issued to the media, murder rumours about their meeting with the visiting U.S. delegation.

Senior U.S. officials, containing Zalmay Khalilzad, previous U.S. ambassador and their representative for Afghanistan, are currently in Pakistan for the past two days and want Pakistan to organize their meeting with the Afghan Taliban in Islamabad.
