Oman- MoCI lists standards recommended by GSO for insecticide aerosol products

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Directorate General of Standards and Metrology of the Ministry of Commerce and industry (MoCI) said that the Gulf Standardization Organization has stipulated standards under GSO: 1832 for insecticide aerosol products for domestic use. Insecticide aerosols are sprays that contain active pesticides and other inert ingredients to kill insects.

Nadia bint Mohammed bin Hamoud al Seyabiyah, head of Chemical and Petroleum Products Specifications Department in MoCI, said, 'The specifications stipulate the requirements for domestic insecticides. They should not have substances harmful to human health under normal use and should be in metallic can. These cans should not be damage-prone under normal storage conditions.'

Nadia said that to ensure compliance these insecticides have to undergo certain tests, including external inspection, measurement of discharge rate, measure of net content, detection of compound chlorofluorocarbons and effectiveness of the pesticide. 'These specifications also stipulate cans to display in legible print the product name, brand, country of origin, date of production, operation number, total weight, net weight of contents in grams or size in milliliters, composition (basic components), action time 50 per cent and action after 24 hours, phrases or warning signs related to use, storage, circulation, health and safety rules.'

To safeguard health and safety of the consumer and to ensure safe trasnportation, the standard specification also stipulates storage, transport and handling terms and conditions. The aerosol packs should be stored in appropriate shipping boxes to protect them from damage during shipment, handling and storage. The containers should be stored in a place with temperature not exceeding 50°C and kept away from direct sunlight, heat sources and flammable materials.

Types of pesticides

There are different types of insecticides available in the market such as tablets that can be placed in an electrically operated device and those that can be kept under beds. Studies indicate that these are toxic and contain compounds of organic phosphorus. There are also certain other components that could pose some types of threat to human health, particularly those who handling them.

Nadia urged users to take all preventive measures such as avoiding inhalation, rationalising and indiscriminate use, and keeping them away from children. 'It is also important to use protective gloves and special clothes while spraying insecticides. These should also be stored at places away from the reach of children.'
