Amman, Nov 13 (Petra) –– Jordan and Iraq on Tuesday agreed on a number of measures to cement economic ties, particularly in the field of intra-trade, spur the private sector to launch ventures and facilitate land transport.
Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Tareq Al-Hammouri held talks with the Iraqi Ministers of Industry, Minerals, Trade and Health, which were attended by officials from the two countries.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the two sides stressed during their meetings in Baghdad on the importance of joint action to boost economic cooperation in various fields, "in a manner to help increase the volume of intra-trade and investment in all sectors and remove any obstacles to trade exchange".
During his meeting with Iraqi Minister of Industry and Minerals, Saleh al-Jabouri and Minister of Trade Mohammad Hashim, Hamouri demanded that Iraq exempt Jordanian goods from customs duties, pursuant to the bilateral free trade agreement signed by the two countries.
He also stressed the importance of rehabilitating the Treibil crossing between the two neighbouring countries and raising its capacity to accommodate transport and cargo movement and speed up clearance procedures on Jordanian goods exported to Iraq.
The statement said the Iraqi side had promised to take measures to speed up the setting up of a permanent Jordanian commercial center in Baghdad to promote bilateral trade.
