Samsung to make over 1 million foldable phones: Details here
12 Nov 2018

Samsung's foldable phone is yet to be named and unveiled in totality, but the South Korean giant has already confirmed that the device will start hitting the shelves in the coming months.

DJ Koh, the chief of Samsung Mobile, confirmed the timeline, noting that the company will make at least one million units of the device for select markets.

Here are more details.

Launch details

While speaking with South Korean journalists at the sidelines of SDC, Koh said he cannot give an exact date, but the phone will be released in the first half of next year.

He added Samsung manufactures at least one million units of flagships and will follow the same strategy for the foldable phone.

And if the response is good, they'll produce more, Koh added.

Foldable flagships

In the same interview, Koh stressed that Samsung will release a new generation of foldable phone just like its Note and S series flagships.

However, the devices won't be available globally, at least in the early days.

They'll first launch for select telecom carriers in markets like America and South Korea, and then enter other parts of the world.

Features

When the foldable phone was unveiled, it was wrapped in a case to protect design elements.

However, it is said the device, which offers a cover and main display, will be convenient to hold and use, when released.

It will run a custom-made Android skin (to use extra screen) and is expected to offer nearly the same battery backup as normal Samsung phones.

Samsung's UI will be critical in the foldable phone arena
Competition

Just a few weeks back, the Royole FlexPai was introduced as the world's first foldable phone.

Koh admitted that Samsung lost the race, but stressed their display would be better than the 'rugged' panel of the FlexPai.

Also, the UI especially designed by Google for the phone will create a much better user experience, he added.
