Ministry of Health launches report on cancer incidence in Oman


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Health (MoH), represented by the Directorate General of Primary Healthcare (DGPH), Non-Communicable Diseases Department, in cooperation with the National Oncology Center, on Sunday launched the 2015 Cancer Incidence Report for Oman.

The launch ceremony was held under the patronage of H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Obaid al Sa'eedi, Minister of Health, in the presence of a number of senior MoH officials. H E Dr Sa'eedi said 'cancer status' in the sultanate is not a matter of concern compared to other countries of the world or in the region.

He pointed out that the sultanate is the first country in the GCC to publish the 2015 Cancer Incidence Report.

The Minister of Health called upon all health workers in the public and private health sectors in the sultanate to cooperate with the cancer registry team by providing it accurate data. Dr Said bin Harib al Lamki, director general of DGPH, said the sultanate has adopted the UN initiative on developing a national multi-sectorial strategy, as well as the National Policy of Non-communicable Diseases Control.

He added that the report covered diseases such as cancer, diabetes, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
One thousand, eight hundred and forty cases have been recorded, out of which 1,615 were Omani (749 male and 866 female).

The cancer cases recorded among children below 14 years was 111 in number. Statistics showed that cancer incidence rate is 103.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, while for men it is prostate cancer. The Oman National Cancer Registry is the mainstay of cancer treatment and control. It is considered a reliable resource for the decision-makers in developing prevention programmes.
