(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Spain's national athletics team has started its training camp at Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) in preparation for a number of upcoming international events. The visit will also test the training and competition venues that will host the IAAF World Championships in Athletics Doha 2019, scheduled to take place from September 28-October 6, 2019, at Khalifa International Stadium.
The 30-member sports delegation consists of coaches, officials, as well as male and female athletes including Miguel Angel Lopez, Adel Mechal, Eusebio Caceres, Marta Perez and others.
The delegation started their training camp on Tuesday by touring the training, accommodation and competition venues at Aspire Zone Foundation. Focusing on Khalifa International Stadium, the tour included Aspire Academy, one of AZF's members, and touched on its programmes, facilities and services as well as its ambitious programme to nurture young sports talent in Qatar.
The athletes also had the opportunity to tour the world's largest indoor multi-purpose sports hall, which can host 11 different sports tournaments simultaneously and has a total seating capacity of 15,500 spectators across 13 separate multi-sport halls.
The players continued their tour on Wednesday by visiting Aspetar, the orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital, to check its departments, facilities and services, all of which help athletes achieve their maximum performance and full potential.
During their stay in Doha, Spain's national athletics team will benefit from Aspetar's world-class sports medicine services including injury assessment. Aspetar will hold a workshop bringing together the team, its researchers and leadership to discuss several topics including heat acclimatisation.
Coach Jorge Marín revealed the objectives of the training camp and said: 'We came here because we want to test the atmosphere and facilities so we are fully prepared for next year. What we have seen is incredible. The facilities are magnificent and Qatar is already as good as ready to organise a top-notch competition.
Meanwhile, the Spanish middle-distance runner Marta Lopez, said: 'We have toured the facilities and seen the Aspire Dome, the swimming pool, the football fields, the tracks and the stadium. But we also came to acclimatise to the temperature and humidity so that when we come back next year we can deliver the best performance possible. I was particularly pleased to see the air conditioning system at Khalifa International Stadium is already fully operational.
During their stay, the team will benefit from Aspire Zone's world-class facilities and climate, which make it an ideal training destination for national teams from around the world.
