Kuwait- Sudanese official calls for urgent Arab action to support UNRWA

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Sept 9 (KUNA) -- Sudan's ambassador to Cairo and its Arab League envoy Abdel-Mahmoud Abdel-Halim on Sunday called for an urgent Arab action to avoid the US funding cut by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
In an address to the Arab League's 150th session at the level of permanent delegates, Abdul-Halim said, the US decision to stop UNRWA funding was "disappointing" to add to the other decisions taken by Washington, including recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of its embassy to the occupied city.
This deficit affects the services provided to the Palestinian people, stressing that it is necessary to ensure the provision of the educational, social, health and humanitarian rights that UNRWA has provided to millions of the Palestinian people, he added.
Abdel-Halim pointed out that achieving a just and comprehensive peace depends on the Palestinian people getting their legitimate rights, establishing their independent state, guaranteeing the rights of the refugees and releasing prisoners according to the Arab peace initiative.
"The current period is going through challenges, but we are capable of setting a new history for our nation, in which prosperity is achieved again," he told, stressing that these challenges require redoubling efforts to protect common Arab national security and safeguard the unity of nations.
He assured Sudan's commitment to the nation's issues and its success in reaching a peace agreement in southern Sudan, pointing out that there are consultations to hold a ministerial meeting of the neighboring countries of Libya in Khartoum.
For his part, the Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the Arab League and the Chairman of the 149th Session, Osama Naqli, stressed the seriousness of the challenges faced by the Palestinian cause, the most important of which was the decision to transfer the American Embassy in Jerusalem to Israel.
Naqli affirmed the importance of implementing the resolutions of international legitimacy to restore stability in Yemen, Syria and Libya, warning of "the seriousness of Iran's aggressive policies in the region." The session discussed a number of cases, particularly the Palestinian issue, the crisis facing UNRWA, the situation in Syria, the recent developments in Libya and in Yemen.
The session will discuss a number of social issues, including the strategy of addressing sexual violence among women, as well as preparations for Arab participation in UN meetings and the establishment of a mechanism for coordination and Arab action with a number of international parties ahead of Arab participation in scheduled meetings this month.
The Kuwaiti delegation is headed by Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs Fahd Al-Awadhi. The delegation includes Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the Arab League Ambassador Ahmed Al-Bakr. (end) mfm.aa
