'Datuk Seri' charged with cheating an Indonesian woman

A 65-year-old man who claimed to have the title Datuk Seri, which is normally bestowed by a governor in Malaysia, has faced charges of cheating an Indonesian woman in the Magistrate Court in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

Saad Ani allegedly cheated the woman out of 580 ringgits (US$148) in January this year by promising to get her an official card which would allow her to be employed by his company, Syarikat SR Manpower Resources Sdn Bhd. Having the card allows illegal foreign workers to become legal employees.

Ani pleaded not guilty to cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property, the New Straits Times reported. He was allowed bail of 5,000 ringgit ($1,278) pending the next hearing on April 3.

If found guilty under Section 420 of the Penal Code, he faces between one and 10 years in jail, a whipping and a fine.
