Taliban set free 14 Paktia police after 8 months


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Taliban insurgents have freed 14 police personnel after holding them captive for eight months in Janikhel district of southeastern Paktia province, an official said on Sunday.

Police also confirmed the news and said the Taliban had captured the policemen in Janikhel district during a fight eight months back.

Abdullah Hasrat, the governor€™s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the policemen were freed after mediation of local elders yesterday night.

Samkani district police chief, Maj. Commander Sayed Ullah Zarif said the policemen were released across the Durand Line and had returned to units. He said the freed personnel belonged to border and public order police.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the freed policemen had been captured in Janikhel district and two of them had already been released and the remaining 14 were freed yesterday night after the guarantee that they would not again join the forces.
