Zimbabwe "new beginning" as Mugabe era comes to an end

(MENAFN) In Harare, capital of Zimbabwe, a protest took place calling for the resignation of President Mugabe before citizens began celebrating their triumph when the army stepped forward to conclude the president's reign.

The protest is confirmed to be backed up by the army as well as the ruling Zanu-PF party; even war veterans who supported the president are encouraging his resignation. BBC reporters witnessed citizens rooting for soldiers and embracing them when a protester said the day was "about a new beginning."

During the rally, one protester said "as Zimbabweans, we are saying to our army: Thank you very much for the peaceful intervention. And it's time for the masses of Zimbabwe to say: Mugabe must go and must go, like, yesterday. We can't wait to see his back. For us, it's about a new beginning. For us, it's about the end of authoritarian rule and we are going to take our Zimbabwe back."
