(MENAFN) Royal College if Psychiatrists has released a report stating that NHS organizations in England are suffering from a one in ten unoccupied psychiatric consultation posts. The report confirms that in the past four years, the amount of vacancies has doubled.
Nine percent of unfilled posts have been suggested in Wales, as Scotland suffers with 6 percent and Northern Ireland a rate of 2 percent. The college has described the vacancies as "frankly alarming", it was verified that they have also raised patients' waiting periods.
The present circumstances indicate that months could pass until patients get to see a psychiatrist, a long enough waiting time of which the patients' condition might worsen, as stated by Professor Wendy Burn, from the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
According to Prof Burn, the situation was "a scandal" since patients suppose they will be provided with a specialist whenever they are in need of one. She said "patients won't get the care they need. Some will have been plucking up the courage to go to their GP, and then there is no-one to see them when they are referred."
