Canada routs Oman

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A day after defeating US by four wickets to open its campaign in the ICC WCL Division Three on a winning note, Oman suffered a massive 83-run defeat at the hands of Canada in Kampala, Uganda, on Wednesday.

Chasing a stiff target of 275 to win, Oman never recovered from a disastrous start as it lost three wickets for just 38 in seven overs. A brave half-century by Zeeshan Maqsood and a fighting 39 from Ajay Lalcheta were the only bright spots as Oman folded for 191 in 40.5 overs.

The win gave Canada its second successive win in the tournament to take it to the top of six-team competition with four points. Canada had defeated Uganda in its opening match.

After put to bat first, the Canadian batsmen thrived on Oman's attack with the openers – Bhavindu Adhihetty (44) and skipper Nitish Kumar sharing a 77-run stand. Despite Oman bowlers keeping the run-rate in check in the middle overs, Canada's lower-order batsmen dealt some huge blows in the last ten overs. Rizwan Cheema smashed 42 off 25 balls with three sixes and four boundaries. No 8 batsman Nikhil Dutta's made 41 off 34 and shared a 74-run eighth-wicket partnership with Hamza Tariq, who hit 34 off 22 with two sixes and two fours.

The Canadian bowlers then responded equally to the batsmen as Satsimranjit Dhindsa took three wickets while Dutta and Cheema claimed two each.

Oman's chase started on the wrong foot as Khawar Ali was run out off the second ball of the innings. Dhindsa struck a crucial blow when he bowled Aqib Ilyas (who was top-scorer in Oman's win over the US) in the third over, reducing Oman to 13 for two. Cecil Pervez had Arun Poulose leg before to leave Oman struggling at 38 for three.

Maqsood took Oman past three figures before Dhindsa had him caught behind in 22nd over. Cheema then struck as he had Naseem Khushi and Amir Ali out in one over to leave Oman at 148 for seven in the 27th over.

In other matches, US bowled out Malaysia for 117 and knocked off the runs with 22 overs to spare, helping its net run rate considerably while

Uganda beat Singapore by 66 runs – it made 217 for nine in 50 overs, and bowled out Singapore for 151.
