Qatar- Talk on translation between education and evaluation held

Doha: The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University a member of Qatar Foundation for Education Science and Community Development hosted a public talk on ‘Translation between Education and Evaluation’.

It was presented by Dr Inaam Bayoud (pictured) Director Arab Higher Institute for Translation in Algeria a member of Association of Arab Universities.

Dr Bayoud focused on the analysis of translation in the contemporary world in the presence of professionals in the field of translation students of TII and members of the public.

Dr Bayoud said: “Criticism of translation is a science in itself for which modern translation experts have put forward theories and definitions establishing this science’s characteristics principles and standards.”

She stressed the need to overcome the narrow description given to translation in the past as only a comparison of vocabulary between languages.

She emphasised that a modern translator not only works with two language systems but also deals with linguistic literary cultural historical social and psychological parameters when conducting work.

Dr Bayoud demonstrated various methodologies used by the modern professional translator and addressed how the role of the translator is evolving in an increasingly digitised world.

The talk is one of opportunities offered by TII to professionals academics students and members of the public to meet and engage with experts in the fields of translation and languages.

Dr Amal Al Malki Executive Director TII said: “One of our main objectives since our establishment in 2012 is to spread awareness about the importance of the field of translation which is relatively new in Qatar.

“We also aim to establish a platform for exchange of ideas and knowledge specific to our region one that can build bridges between academics employers and the community.

“The Annual Translation Conference we host is an opportunity we offer to professionals academics students and the general community to meet and communicate with experts of translation and linguistics” he added.
