Ban strongly condemns "despicable" attack on civilians in Afghanistan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday "condemns in the strongest possible terms" the "despicable criminal" attack on civilians earlier today in Kabul and Paktika, south-eastern Afghanistan, his deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told the daily press briefing.

The attack on civilians in Paktika "during the holy month of Ramadan is a despicable criminal act," which killed and injured many innocent people, including children, Haq said.

Ban also condemned a targeted attack against civilian workers in the capital Kabul earlier today, which killed two government employees.

Noting that these acts come just days after the release of the UN report on the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, Ban stressed that "such attacks, directed against civilians, are serious violations of international humanitarian law, recalling the "serious challenges" that still face Afghanistan.

He once again commended the "bravery and resilience" of the Afghan people, who participated in two rounds of elections in a clear rejection of violence and who continue to work towards a more prosperous and peaceful future.
