Elders ask Pakistan to avoid fueling tribal rift on border

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Hundreds of tribal elders held a huge gathering in the border town of Torkham in eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday, calling on Pakistan to avoid fueling rift between tribes on both sides of the Durand Line.

Tribal elders across the border in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province had been invited to attend the gathering but they were not allowed by Pakistani forces.

The elders, who had gathered in Torkham, said tribes living on both sides of the Durand Line were the same and Pakistan's attempts to separate them were useless.

They asked the Pakistani government to allow the tribes to move between the two countries without passport and visa.

Tribal elder Haji Khalil told the gathering that they had started efforts to unite the people of Nangarhar in rejecting the Durand Line as a border.

The elders said the tribesmen on both sides of the border lacked cooperation and it was the reason behind their problems. He said if such gatherings were continued, many problems could be addressed.

Tribal unity council head for the east, Lal Agha Kakar, said the gathering was aimed at striking unity among tribes on both sides of the Durand Line.
