The U.S. was the leader in global imports of newsprint, accounting for a 23% share (based on USD). It was followed by Germany (9%), India (6%), and the UK (6%).

In 2015, U.S. newsprint imports totaled 2,511 million USD, which was 622 million USD (20%) less than the year before.

Overall, U.S. newsprint imports showed a downward trend from 2007 to 2015. A large drop in 2009 was followed by stabilization in the year after, until imports decreased again. Afterwards, imports flattened over 2013-2014, only to plummet again in 2015, cutting to half of the level of 2008.

Despite the dramatic decrease in the import level, the U.S. continues to be one of the biggest markets for global exporters.

Canada was the dominant supplier of newsprint into the U.S., with a 91% share of total U.S. imports in 2015, based on USD. Import from Canada declined by -9.3% per year from 2007 to 2014. Finland (3%) and Norway (3%) were the other notable suppliers. The shares of other supplying countries remained relatively stable over the period under review.

From 2007 to 2015, the U.S. was a net importer of newsprint, depending heavily on overseas supplies. Following the negative market trend, net U.S. imports of newsprint shrank over the period under review, falling from 5,538 million USD in 2007 to 2,511 million USD in 2015.
