QU college to launch online courses in cyber security

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Kindi Centre for Computing Research at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) is developing two free online courses in cyber security to raise community awareness on issues related to cyber security in the Gulf region.
The courses in Arabic and English - Cyber Security in the Workplace, and Cyber Security in Daily Life - are expected to be launched in March 2016. They were developed in conjunction with Open University (UK) and with the support of the UK Global Cyber Capacity Building Programme, and customised to address the needs of commercial organisations as well as the general population in the Gulf region.
The course on "Cyber Security in the Workplace" aims to improve learners' practical skills in cyber security, and help them understand main concepts to improve security of their computing systems. The course includes four modules on key cyber security threats, regulations, laws and standards.
The course on "Cyber Security in Daily Life" looks at ways to improve cyber security practices of the general public for daily-use of computing systems. It includes six modules focusing on privacy, ethical considerations and laws relevant to the public, as well as practical guidance on improving password security, protection against social engineering/phishing attacks, and how to respond to a cyber-attack.
CENG dean Dr Rashid Alammari said: "Cyber security is important and our shared responsibility. In establishing these new courses, CENG is demonstrating its position as a leading partner in tackling emerging issues related to our connectedness as a society and beyond. Our students as well as the general public will benefit from gaining skills and knowledge in cyber security as it will add value to their knowledge, academic and professional profiles and their future career prospects."
Kindi director Prof Qutaibah Malluhi said: "As our lives increasingly depend on digital services, the need to protect our information from being maliciously disrupted or misused is really important.
"In this regard, cyber security has become a national priority for countries across the Gulf region, and empowering the users with cyber security knowledge is a key part of national and regional cyber security strategies."
