ISESCO condemns French newspapers publication of offensive cartoons

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, ISESCO, has strongly denounced the publication of cartoons denigrating the Prophet Muhammad, PBUH, by the French dailies Le Monde, Les Echos, Liberation and L'Humanite, as well as by the weekly Le Point, days only after the deplorable criminal attacks against satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Dr. Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, the Director General of ISESCO in a statement casted such a move as a racist, immoral and provocative act against hundreds of millions of Muslims, which betrays the intent of those in charge of the said newspapers and magazines to fuel hatred and incite to terrorism. This is far beyond freedom of expression, as it actually entails an arrogant determination to ridicule the sanctities of Muslims.

ISESCO urged its Member States, along with Human Rights Organisations and UNESCO, to condemn this provocative act which runs counter to the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and to the UN resolution calling for respect for religions and religious symbols.

Dr. Altwaijri hailed the Moroccan Ministry of Communication's decision whereby it banned the distribution of some French newspapers and magazines in Morocco for having reprinted material offending to the prophet, PBUH, previously printed by Charlie Hebdo.
