Chanel And Centre Pompidou Renew Collaboration Amid Museum's Closure
The Centre Pompidou has deepened its ties with Chanel through a new five-year partnership, adding another layer to the museum's strategy as it undergoes an over $500 million renovation and remains closed until 2030. The collaboration, which began in 2019, will now support access, scholarship, and the preservation of public knowledge, according to the museum.
The timing is notable. Rather than pausing its public-facing ambitions during the closure, the Pompidou has been building a wider network of institutional and private partnerships. Last week, it announced a separate plan with M+ in Hong Kong to lend artworks and collaborate on research projects and exhibitions. It has also expanded through satellite museums in Seoul, Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil, and Brussels.
Chanel's role has already been visible in the museum's recent acquisitions and programming. In 2024, the fashion house supported the purchase of 21 artworks by 15 contemporary Chinese artists, including Alice Chen, Chen Wei, Cui Jie, Hu Xioyuan, and Lu Yang. It also backed the exhibition“目 China: A New Generation of Artists.”
Yana Peel, Chanel's president of arts, culture, and heritage, described the Pompidou as“a defining institution in France and a global platform for the exchange of ideas.” The museum said the new partnership is intended to sustain“the enduring vitality of the museum.”
The renovation itself is extensive. It includes work on the distinctive building designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, the relocation of Constantin Brancusi's former studio from its off-site home, now known as the Brancusi Pavilion, into the main museum, and a complete rehang of the collection. The Brancusi Pavilion will eventually house the Kandinsky Library and the museum's archives department.
For the Pompidou, the partnership is more than a sponsorship announcement. It is part of a larger effort to keep the institution active, visible, and intellectually productive while its physical home is transformed.
