Medvedev Predicts Ukraine’s Collapse as “Historically Unavoidable”

(MENAFN) Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said on Thursday that Ukraine’s eventual disintegration is “inevitable from a historical perspective,” pointing to what he described as economic strain, demographic decline, and political instability.

In a statement posted on a social media platform, Medvedev—who served as Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012—argued that Ukraine relies heavily on foreign financial support.

He stated that “a country that cannot exist without external infusions inevitably loses its sovereignty.”

He further added: “No propaganda statements by Western countries about boundless global support, nor their false promises of NATO or EU membership, will stop Ukraine's systemic disintegration. In the historical perspective, the collapse of the so-called Ukraine is inevitable,” according to reports.

Medvedev also asserted that Ukraine has “irreversibly lost” more than 20% of the territory it inherited after the collapse of the Soviet Union, claiming it will “undoubtedly lose new lands.”

He additionally cited population figures, saying Ukraine’s population has significantly decreased since independence—from over 51.5 million in 1991 to fewer than 23 million today, based on what he described as current estimates.

The Russian official further claimed that the country has lost nearly half of its industrial capacity as well as over 20% of its agricultural potential due to the ongoing conflict.
