China Denounces U.S. Indictment of Cuba's Raúl Castro

(MENAFN) China moved swiftly Thursday to denounce the United States' indictment of former Cuban President and revolutionary figure Raúl Castro, throwing its diplomatic weight behind Havana in a sharp rebuke of Washington.

Beijing "firmly opposes unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law or authorization of the UN Security Council," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun declared at a regular news conference in Beijing.

The U.S. Department of Justice had announced a day earlier a superseding indictment charging Castro with the murder of four individuals, among them three American citizens. Fidel Castro's younger brother and political successor stands accused of direct involvement in the shootdown of two Brothers to the Rescue aircraft on Feb. 24, 1996.

Guo broadened Beijing's criticism beyond the indictment itself, voicing opposition to the "abuse of judicial proceedings" and to "external forces putting pressure on Cuba" — pointed language directed squarely at Washington's posture toward the island nation.

The Chinese spokesman called on the United States to "stop threatening Cuba with force."
