Australian Court Upholds Online Safety Fine Against Musk's X
The court said X failed to provide sufficient information about measures aimed at protecting children from online sexual exploitation and abuse.
The case began in October 2023 when Australia's online safety regulator issued a fine of 610,500 Australian dollars against the platform over inadequate responses to questions related to child protection efforts.
Federal Court Judge Michael Wheelahan increased the penalty to 650,000 Australian dollars and ordered X to pay an additional 100,000 Australian dollars in legal costs.
Lawyers for X said the violations were linked to“historical delays” in providing information during the company's ownership transition after Elon Musk acquired the platform.
Australian online safety officials argued that failure to cooperate with regulators undermines enforcement efforts, even if no direct harm is proven.
The dispute is one of several confrontations between X and Australian authorities over harmful online content, platform accountability and child safety protections.
Australia has introduced some of the world's strictest online safety regulations in recent years, increasing pressure on major social media platforms to combat harmful and illegal content.
Since acquiring Twitter and rebranding it as X, Elon Musk has faced growing scrutiny from regulators in multiple countries over content moderation, misinformation and compliance with digital safety laws.
