Türkiye Urges Stronger Civilian Protection, Accountability in Global Conflicts at UN

(MENAFN) Türkiye has called for stronger international action to protect civilians in armed conflicts and ensure accountability for violations of international humanitarian law, according to reports.

Speaking at a UN Security Council open session on the protection of civilians, Türkiye’s Permanent Representative Ahmet Yildiz emphasized that safeguarding non-combatants is a shared responsibility of the international community and should remain a central priority in global diplomacy.

He warned that inconsistent or selective application of international law undermines trust in multilateral institutions and weakens the credibility of the international legal system.

Yildiz referenced multiple conflict zones in his remarks, highlighting humanitarian conditions in Gaza Strip as still dire, even amid ceasefire efforts, and calling for renewed progress toward a two-state framework.

On Lebanon, he stressed the importance of preserving sovereignty and stability, describing recent ceasefire arrangements as a step forward that should be reinforced through sustained diplomacy.

Regarding Syria, he said there is an opportunity for a more stable future based on inclusive governance and equal citizenship, while also supporting accountability efforts for past crimes.

He also described the humanitarian situation in Sudan as severe, urging urgent international attention, and reiterated support for a Libyan-led political process in Libya.

The envoy concluded by reaffirming Türkiye’s support for global efforts aimed at ensuring accountability and preventing violations of international humanitarian law, according to reports.
