Cuba Condemns Israel’s Treatment of Gaza Flotilla Members at UN
(MENAFN) Cuba has strongly criticized the treatment of Gaza-bound aid activists detained in international waters, accusing Israel of violating international law and acting with impunity, according to reports.
Speaking at a UN Security Council session on the protection of civilians in armed conflict, Cuba’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, said activists involved in the Global Sumud flotilla were arbitrarily detained while transporting humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip.
He condemned what he described as torture and unlawful detention of flotilla members, arguing that the incident reflects a broader pattern of violations against international humanitarian norms.
The ambassador said international law is being weakened by what he described as selective interpretation that enables collective punishment and the use of siege tactics in warfare, according to reports.
He further alleged that Israeli actions across the occupied Palestinian territories amount to serious crimes against civilians, citing attacks on homes, schools, shelters, places of worship, and humanitarian facilities.
Soberón Guzmán called for accountability, accusing Israel of committing grave violations and raising allegations of apartheid and genocide against Palestinians, while also criticizing support provided by the United States.
He additionally reiterated Cuba’s opposition to US policy toward the island, warning against what he described as threats of military action and external pressure.
The remarks were delivered during a broader UN debate focused on civilian protection in conflict zones, according to reports.
