Colombia’s President Slams Israeli Minister Over Flotilla Video

(MENAFN) Colombian President Gustavo Petro has sharply criticized Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, comparing his conduct to that of a “true Nazi” after the publication of footage showing detained international activists from a Gaza-bound flotilla, according to reports.

The diplomatic dispute followed the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla by the Israeli Navy, a convoy of around 430 international volunteers attempting to reach the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid.

The video shared by Ben-Gvir showed detained activists bound and kneeling at a detention site in Ashdod, prompting widespread international backlash.

Writing on the US social media platform X, Petro said, “State Minister Ben-Gvir is acting like a true Nazi,” and accused him of mistreating Colombian nationals and other participants who were seeking to “stop the genocide in Gaza,” according to reports.

In the circulated footage, Ben-Gvir is seen carrying and waving an Israeli flag while walking among restrained activists forced to kneel in rows. The clip also shows detainees under heavy restraint at a makeshift facility, with the Israeli national anthem playing in the background.

The video was captioned by Ben-Gvir with the message “Welcome to Israel.” In one moment shown in the footage, a detained activist who shouted “Free Palestine” was reportedly pushed down by security personnel.
