US Reportedly Threatens Visa Action Against Palestinian UN Delegation
(MENAFN) United States has reportedly threatened to revoke visas for members of the Palestinian delegation to the United Nations unless the Palestinian representative withdraws a candidacy for a senior UN post, according to reports.
The warning centers on Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour, who is running for one of the vice presidency positions of the UN General Assembly. A diplomatic cable cited by reports said US officials instructed staff in Jerusalem to pressure Palestinian representatives to abandon the bid or face potential consequences, including visa revocation.
The cable allegedly characterized Mansour’s role as controversial, citing his past statements about Israel and arguing that his nomination could heighten tensions and undermine US-led diplomatic efforts related to Gaza. It also suggested that the move could strain relations with the Palestinian Authority.
US officials declined to publicly comment on the specific report, referring instead to standard confidentiality rules regarding visa matters, while reaffirming obligations under the UN Headquarters Agreement.
This is not the first time Washington has taken such action. In a previous instance last year, US authorities reportedly revoked visas for Palestinian officials ahead of a UN General Assembly session in New York, amid heightened diplomatic disputes involving recognition efforts for Palestinian statehood, according to reports.
